The moon has been the focus of song and superstition for what seems like millennia. The blue moon is a rare and special event, thus our saying that something only happens "once in a blue moon". The blue moon can also be a symbol of sadness and loneliness. Lovers blame the blue moon when their romance is hampered in some way.
